June 22, 2019 – FLOW organized a team that participated in the Asian Counseling and Referral Service’s annual Walk for Rice (ACRS). The Walk for Rice raises funds for the ACRS’s food bank, which provides culturally familiar foods. A HUGE thank you to everyone who participated in or donated to the FLOW Team. With your help, we raised $770 to donate to the ACRS food bank. After the Walk for Rice, our annual FLOW BBQ was held at member Eric de los Santos’ home with the generous participation of our ABAW friends. Other special guests included incoming President of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, Mr. Domingo “Egon” Q. Cayosa and his wife, Hon. Maria Milagros Fernan-Cayosa.
June 25, 2019 – The Filipino Lawyers of Washington (FLOW), National Filipino American Lawyers Association (NFALA), Asian Bar Association of Washington (ABAW), the National Lawyers Guild, the World Peace through Law section of the WSBA and K&L Gates LLP, jointly hosted Philippine Senator Risa Hontiveros for a discussion of human rights, civil rights and other issues in the Philippines, including a discussion on the role lawyers can play in defending democracy both in the Philippines and the U.S. against threats against democracy and an independent judiciary. Hontiveros urged Filipinos and Filipino Americans to “continue to be proactive, more creative with our political actions by organizing, educating.”
This event was one stop during her 3 city visit, including Seattle, San Francisco, and the Los Angeles area.
July 28, 2019 – FLOW attended Pista sa Nayon, a one-day festival showcasing Filipino culture that includes food, information and arts & crafts booths, live entertainment and children’s games.
FLOW hosted a booth at the festival to provide more information on FLOW and other legal resources.
